John W. Toland and his wife, Marguerite, founded the Toland Funeral Home on the corner of Slingluff Ave. and Walnut St. in 1929. He had been employed by the Boyd Furniture and Funeral Company in Dover.
In 1935, they purchased the Toomey home at the funeral home's current location at 803 N. Wooster Ave. in Dover. Richard Herzig of Dover married John and Marguerite's daughter, Marilyn and joined the business in 1950.

The funeral home became known as the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home. Richard and Marilyn started their family with two children, John and Peggy. After graduating from college, John Herzig joined his father and grandfather in the business in 1975. John Herzig married Joyce (Dallau) Herzig and in 1976, Toland-Herzig acquired the former Steffe Funeral Home in Strasburg. John and Joyce have three children, Trevor, Troy, and Tricia and seven grandchildren. Since its inception in 1935, the Dover funeral home has undergone four major expansions. The Strasburg location was also completely renovated and remodeled.

In 1999, Toland-Herzig acquired the former Friendly's Restaurant on the Boulevard in Dover and completely refurbished the facility into the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. The center is the Tuscarawas Valley's premier gathering place having already hosted events ranging from weddings and receptions, family reunions and parties, to corporate outings, community information seminars and civic-minded activities by groups such as the Red Cross and Hospice of Tuscarawas County. The Monarch Center was fully renovated again in the fall of 2016.
In 2005, John Herzig’s daughter, Tricia Herzig-McKinnon, became a full-time apprentice after graduating from Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science and later became a full-time funeral director, embalmer & certified crematory operator. Tricia married Joel McKinnon in December of 2003 and they have 3 children Jack, Stone, and Klaire.
In the summer of 2015 John’s son, Troy Herzig, joined the family business as a certified crematory operator. Troy has 4 children Kylan, Alyssa, Ava, and Alivia.
As many area residents know John Herzig began collecting famous funeral memorabilia in 2006 and started presenting displays of his collection throughout the funeral home. The Dover facility became a popular attraction in the community and in the fall of 2015, our Dover funeral home was expanded again to make room for the Famous Endings Museum & Cafe. Today, the museum is used for tour groups, business meetings, and funeral receptions.
